Shippers required to verify container gross mass

Shippers are required to verify the gross mass of a container carrying cargo under the new Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) regulation, effective July 1. Containers that are not accompanied by a shipping document signed either electronically or in hard copy by the shipper will not be loaded onto any ships. Malaysia External Trade Development Corporation (Matrade) Transport, Defense and MRO (Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul) Unit director Md Silmi Abd Rahman said that there are sufficient weighing facilities located across all Malaysian ports. "The SOLAS regulation will be implemented worldwide, which will not only prevent accidents, but also increase port efficiency. "The weighing cost for each container will be priced at RM5, which has been revised from the earlier price of RM10. "In Europe, weighing charges are 30 Euros per container," said Silmi.
